By Teachers, For Teachers
Are you looking for that perfect gift for your child’s teacher, or perhaps something to give to a retiring colleague? Books make wonderful gifts, especially a great picture book with a perfect message. Whether that message be of dreams, of future goals or completed ones, jobs well done and jobs yet tackled, sometimes the simplest message says so much. Add a personalized inscription, have your whole team sign, or even your whole school, to give it that special thought that the receiver can come back to anytime they need a pick me up.
Of course, “Oh, the Places You’ll Go” by Dr. Seuss is a forever favorite, but try one of these five and see what you think!
A former principal used to gift each teacher who left our building, whether it be on new assignment or new district, this beautiful picture book. What I remember most was the emotional reaction from both the giver and receiver upon opening it up and reading the heartfelt poetry inside. Gorgeous illustrations by five different illustrators bring a wonderful depth and variety to the dreaminess of the poems. It’s a wonderful picture book for those at any stage of their life, as the poems celebrate the many passages that age can brings with it.
Of the five books listed here, this one is a title that continues to make me tear up every time I read it. Perfect for someone who is starting something new, whether it be a new grade level, a new school, a new position or retirement, it’s a simplistic story about letting go and seeing what happens. Long’s picture books are always beautifully illustrated, and this is no different. You’ll want to buy one for yourself to keep.
An overall solid pick for a gift for a teacher. This is a lovely picture book celebrating the importance of being a teacher. Colorful and cute, there is an additional section at the end to write a special message for that special teacher.
Yes, you read that right. A picture book by Weird Al Yankovic, and it’s just as silly and cute as you would think it would be. Focusing on a youngster without a clue who he’s to become, the different careers he can be make the playful story all the more important when you understand his inspirational 103-year old grandfather still isn’t sure what he wants to be. This book is one kids would enjoy reading and talking to their teacher about, so this gift could serve double duty - as a keepsake for a teacher who inspired your child to become whatever he could be when he grew up, and as a class read to inspire those kids in her class. This also makes a fun gift for a graduate as he pursues his new career.
Surprised to see this one? I received this as a gift from a parent who thought I had enough traditional gifts and coffee mugs. This is a laugh-out loud, usable gift that is surprisingly enjoyable. Coloring books are all the rage, and this one adds with it a twist. Beautiful shapes and designs surround alternate swear words, like “Shitake Mushrooms” and “What the What.” It’s a shorter book, but unlike anything I had ever received before. Pair it with a set of markers or colored pencils for the perfect combination. You know your colleagues and kids’ teachers, and if you think they’d enjoy this one, you are most likely right.
